The COM.IT.ES is a non
profit institution, organized and financed by the Italian
Government. The members of COM.IT.ES are Italian citizens elected by Italian citizens residing in the various
Consular Districts.
The COM.IT.ES (Acronym of
Italian word for Committee of Italian Residents abroad) was
conceived during the period of vast emigration from Italy in the two
decades following the end of World War II. For a series of events,
related to certain political reasons and bureaucratic difficulties,
the "Bill for COM.IT.ES" was approved by Italian Parliament only in
the 1980's. In the meantime, the condition of Italians residing
outside of Italy was already modified in comparison with the
previous years. For this reason, the "COM.IT.ES Bill" was renovated
with some adjustments connected to the new social positions and
economic improvements of the Italians, conquered by their hard work,
their skills and their commitment.
With the elected members, the COM.IT.ES around the world are
composed of important individuals (selected by co-optation)
representing the italo-foreigners associations established in many
nations since the last century.
The COM.IT.ES of the Consular District of San Francisco represents
the Italians who live in Northern California, Oregon, Washington
State, Utah, Hawaii and the Samoan Islands. Every four years the
COM.IT.ES of different countries elect the members of CGIE
(Consiglio Generale Italiani Residenti all'Estero) operating within
the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affair.
